For the 2nd day in a row, I will be talking about Braylon Edwards on my blog. Yesterday, I humorously criticized how poor Edwards is doing in his contract year, with 10 catches for 130 yards and now an accusation of assault. Edwards runs half speed seemingly every play and doesn’t finish plays. I mentioned my blog to a fellow sports writer, Walter Cherepinsky of walterfootball.com, and told him that the worst person in the world to right a book entitled “how to perform and behave in your contract year” would be Braylon Edwards. On his recent NFL picks, Walter responded to my comment by saying this “If Edwards can't perform or stay out of legal trouble in his contract year, who's going to sign him for big money? Actually, who's even going to sign him? If I were running an NFL team, the most I'd offer Edwards at this point is 40 bucks, a couple of bus tokens and a pack of Stride Forever Fruit gum sitting on my desk.” Well apparently someone wants him. The Jets traded for the troubled superstar today.
Trade for the Jets: Oh, this is what they need. They have things going well with Mark Sanchez and his current group of receiver so they bring in someone who’s going to be more of a chemistry distraction than any thing and give up something other than 40 bucks, a couple of bus token, and a pack of Stride Forever Fruit gum for him. They gave up 2 picks, rumored to be a 3rd and 5th, but that has not yet been disclosed, a key special teams player, and Chansi Stuckey who is a non-troubled wide receiver who has been producing this year, 11 catches for 120 yards and a touchdown, and has chemistry with Mark Sanchez. And they don’t even get to keep him past this year unless they pay him what he wants, which is going to be way too much.
Trade for the Browns: Good for them to get him out of there before he causes anymore of a distraction with his legal troubles and his poor attitude. Plus, now they don’t have to worry about losing him for nothing or overpaying him. They got a couple of decent picks and a good young receiver. They are obviously rebuilding and it helps their rebuilding cause to get rid of Edwards and replace him with more grateful players that will by into the rebuilding cause. Mohamed Massaquoi, a 2009 2nd round pick, has looked good this year and will step into the role as their #1 receiver with Edwards gone. They also have Brian Robiskie who has some promise and of course now they have Chansi Stuckey.
As for Massaquoi, pick him up in fantasy leagues now. I do my Fantasy Football Pickups every Tuesday so this didn’t get in, but Massaquoi will be great in the weeks to come. He’s now the uncontested #1 receiver in Cleveland and has built some chemistry with uncontested (for the time being) starting quarterback Derek Anderson. He had 8 catches for 148 yards last week against a good Cincinnati defense with Anderson at quarterback for the first time this season. Obviously you can’t expect 148 yards per week, but he has some upside and should be owned in way more than the 0.2% of leagues (ESPN) he is currently owned in.

I thought I’d change things up today by talking today about a new book written by an NFL player. The book entitled “how to perform and behave in your contract year” is written by wide receiver Braylon Edwards of the Cleveland Browns. Braylon is a self proclaimed expert on how to perform and behave in your contract year and he wrote a book to share his knowledge with others. We are fortunate enough to have Braylon here today to talk about his book.
The Football Fan Spot: So Braylon tell us some about your book, don’t spoil it for us, but give us a little snapshot.
Braylon: Well the first advice I give players is to build a lot of hype around yourself with a great season 2 years before your contract year. Then, what you have to do is suck, like be awful one year before your contract. Drop every pass thrown to you and really get people wondering what the hell happened.
TFFS: Ok, so I see, and then you come back in your contract year and be as good as you were before right?
Braylon: No, no, you got it all wrong. What you need to do in your contract year is be even worse. You got just not even try out there. Hurt your knee playing basketball, run half speed all year, drop passes, and then to top it off, you gotta punch someone, like hard, so that he goes to the emergency room and you get accused of assault.
TFFS: Ok, I’m not really getting it, what next?
Braylon: That’s it!
TFFS: You mean that’s your secret?
Braylon: Oh yeah, see, if you’re awful they’ll want to take a chance on you thinking that maybe you’ll bounce back the next year and then maybe the next year, its like a slot machine, you pull the lever and win once, and you just keep pulling and lose all your money. Best part is, its fun and you don’t even have to try.
TFFS:: Um, ok, I guess that makes sense, sort of, not really. But answer me one thing, why would anyone want to buy your book now that you’ve told everyone all that’s in it.
Braylon: Well, you see, I’m not the most economically intelligent person in the world. Like I honestly have no idea how to make money doing anything. Oh, hold on, that guy, looked at me funny, I gotta go pop him in the mouth.
(In case you couldn’t already tell, Braylon Edwards did not actually have an interview with The Football Fan Spot. Braylon Edwards, to the my knowledge, has never written a book. Braylon Edwards did not actually say any of these things. I was merely taking a situation and turning it humorous by exaggerating some. Don’t sue me (or punch me in the face) Braylon If you’re somehow reading this.)
